이번 전시는 이화여자대학교 박물관 소장 유물에 AR기술을 접목시켜 사용자가 보다 쉽고 재미있게 유물에 대한 정보를 습득하도록 제작하여, 관람객들이 우리 문화재에 관심을 갖고 교육적 효과는 물론 흥미를 가질 수 있는 기회를 마련하고자 기획되었다.

《증강풍경》展에 전시된 작품은 <노안도 6폭 병풍>, <태평항해도>, <책거리 10폭 병풍>, <해학반도도 병풍>, <화각 함> 등 5점으로 19세기 조선의 풍경을 엿볼 수 있는 유물들이다. 또한 증강현실(AR) 기술을 활용한 체험 프로그램을 함께 즐길 수 있는 전시로, 전시를 관람하다 AR체험 표시가 있는 전시품이 있다면, 안내에 따라 애플리케이션을 설치하고 촬영하면 더욱 재미있는 관람이 될 것이다.

첫 번째 작품인 <해학반도도 병풍>은 서울특별시 유형문화재 제 420호로, 조선시대 궁중에서 왕실의 번영과 무병장수를 염원하면서 처소를 장식하기 위해 제작된 유물이다. 아름다운 연못인 요지에 복숭아가 탐스럽게 열린 장면을 묘사한 그림으로, AR 기술을 통해 복숭아나무 사이사이에 있는 백학, 황학, 청학을 더 실감 나게 감상할 수 있다.

<책거리 10폭 병풍>은 병풍 형식의 화면에 책과 책장을 중심으로 도자기, 문방구, 향로 등의 기물을 그린 그림이다. AR로 작품을 들여다보면 병풍에 대한 설명을 자세히 들어볼 수 있다.

<태평항해도>는 명성황후의 조카 민영익이 보빙사(報聘使) 전권대사로 미국 대통령에게 국서를 전하기 위해 무사 귀환을 바라며 장승업에게 의뢰한 작품이다. 이 작품은 AR로 보면 파도의 물결을 더욱더 생생하게 즐길 수 있다.

<노안도 6폭 병풍>은 검은 비단에 화려한 금니(金泥)의 필치가 돋보이는 화려하고 아름다운 작품이다. 기러기와 갈대를 함께 그린 노안도는 19세기 길상화의 유행 속에 노후의 편안한 삶을 기원하는 그림으로 사랑받았다. AR을 통해 작품을 감상하면 기러기의 움직임을 체험해 볼 수 있다.

마지막으로 조선시대 <화각 함>은 소뿔을 얇게 저며 곱게 간 표면에 그림을 그린 후 나무로 만든 함에 덧붙여 장식한 함이다. AR을 통해 유물에 장식되어 있는 옛 무늬들을 자세하고 새롭게 만나볼 수 있다.

이처럼 《증강풍경》展은 19세기 조선의 유물과 AR기술이 만나 새로운 예술을 탄생시켰다. 예술은 늘 다양한 매체를 통해 인간이 상상하는 새로운 것들을 창작해 왔다. AR을 이용한 작품의 등장으로 또 다른 문화적 변화가 찾아오고 있는 것만은 분명한 일이다. 이번 전시를 통해 5G시대에 가장 유망한 가상증강현실(AR) 등 실감기술과 만나 관람객에게 그동안 어디에서도 볼 수 없었던 우리 문화유산의 새로운 모습과 체험 기회를 선보일 것으로 기대한다.

 In accordance with the pandemic era, Ochang Gallery at Cheongju Museum of Art presents a hands-on exhibition using augmented reality (AR) technology.

The AR Scenery Exhibition provides a fun, easy way to learn about historical relics by grafting AR technology onto items from the Ewha Womans University Museum. Spectators will be able to learn about and develop interest in Korean cultural assets.

The five pieces of art on display in the exhibition are Reeds and Wild Geeses, 6-Fold Folding Screen; Sailing in Peace; Chaekgeori (the Scholar’s Accouterments), 10-Fold Folding Screen; Cranes and Peaches, 10-Fold Folding Screen; and Box Decorated with Painted Ox-Horn Sheets, through which viewers can get a glimpse of the Joseon Dynasty in the 19th century. Through a smartphone app, spectators will be able to access AR technology to make the best of the exhibition usingdesignatedcodes .

The first artwork Cranes and Peaches, 10-Fold Folding Screen is Seoul Tangible Cultural Heritage no. 420. This historical relic decorated bedrooms in royal palaces during the Joseon Dynasty and represented wishes for the prosperity and longevity of the royal family. Through AR technology, an illustration of appetizing peaches growing by the beautiful Yoji Pond emerges for a more realistic viewing of the white, yellow, and blue cranes spaced out among the peach trees.

Chaekgeori (the Scholar’s Accouterments), 10-Fold Folding Screen is a folding screen with illustrations of pottery, stationery, and incense burners centered around books and bookshelves. A detailed explanation can be accessed by viewing the artwork through the AR app.

Sailing in Peace was commissioned of painter Jang Seung-eop by Min Yeong-ik, the nephew of Empress Myeongseong. The work expresses wishes for Min’s safe return from his journey as a plenipotentiary ambassador of Bobingsa to deliver an official document to the president of the United States. The waves in this piece come alive when viewed in AR.

Reeds and Wild Geeses, 6-Fold Folding Screen is a splendid, colorful piece that features bold golden strokes on black silk. As a work that represents wishes for stability in old age, this illustration of wild geese and common reeds was popular in the 19th century, when auspicious illustrations were a trend. AR technology grants the geese in this piece the gift of movement.

Finally, the Joseon-era Box Decorated with Painted Ox-Horn Sheets is a wooden gift box that features drawings on ox horns that have been cut, flattened into thin slates, and affixed to the box’s surface. A new, detailed observation of the item’s patterns is made possible through AR technology.

As such, relics from the 19th-century Joseon Dynasty meet AR technology and create new art in the AR Scenery Exhibition. Using various forms of media, art has always allowed humans to turn their imaginations into creation, and it is clear that the emergence of artworks using AR is creating cultural changes. We are certain that through this exhibition, the combination of cultural heritage and AR technology—one of the most promising features of the 5G era—will present viewers with completely new aspects and opportunities that they have never experienced before.
